DVD Movie Review [ 08-09-06 ]| R E C O M M E N D S |
![]() 1. 16 Blocks | A criminal turned state witness and a cop goes head to head with the most corrupt organization within the NYPD. They need to get across 16 blocks for 118 minutes to get the witness' testimony on the stand. Going against a notorious corrupt ring of policemen, well as we know, it's not a pretty thought at all. But suddenly the plot thickens. Quite an interesting twists and turns in this story, that will get your head ducking bullets. Bruce Willis portrayed the slightly overweight old cop, usually his got this wasted look as always. You've seen it before. Imagine his image on Die Hard movie combined with Sixth sense's character, and voila, instant wasted cop. The only difference with Die Hard is he's in a good looking suit. Anyway... Mos Def, portraying a common thug who'll play the part of as a witness against a corrupt cop, he witness killing someone. He's quite fit for the role, he's got that gangster attitude, the usual tripper and a sensitive side, eager to have a better life than what he has. Plus, you've got David Morse, the typical bad guy. Mellow down, cunning, plus he looks good on a suit. I love his brown coat and light blue shirt under it, the tie fits perfectly too. I bet it'll look good on me. The story was really good, I mean, the twists were really interesting. Well, it's just a simple action and thriller film. and if you want a movie with guns, cops and constant running? you'd want this one. Good guys and bad guys, shooting each other, it's one of those films that most men would enjoy, without the painful thinking. The sound was really great. If you've bought the DVD, you'd really love how the sound effects were perfectly carved. You could hear the gun shots as if you were there. I especially loved the panning of sounds, that when they move, you could actually hear the sound move with you. If you have those 5.1 speakers or home theater setup, and you're into sound clarity, buy this film. Perfect clear sound, beautiful soundscape, musical score that will really get you in the mood. The actors really portrayed their roles well, especially Mos Def. There was one scene where he was about to be framed, with gun and then he later on they'd shoot him, he portrayed that part well. You don't just stand or pretend scared to a gun point, you really have to fear the gun, fear death. You could really see him, giving this crying sound and bending as if he wants to get away from this all, it was really a good performance. He really can act. It's not just the look, I mean, most rappers if they played the part, it's all about being COOL, well here, you can see that he played the part of a person where he can actually commit a crime and at the same time had that emotions that most people show when they're in a state of fear, sadness... The only movie I've seen with this kind of emotion portrayed perfect, was of Saving Private Ryan. Though I have to say, there was some inconsistencies within the movie. I had to comment with its timing. Basically, it a race through time, they have at least two hours, but they acted and set the area which overlasped the time. Considering the area, you have 16 blocks, at least more than 10 blocks they'd have to walk, right? Bruce's character was this typical obese cop, with a bad knee, plus he get shot in his hand. If you've been shot in the hand, you'd really feel the pain, you can't walk that fast. The dialogues are over the set time frame, you'd notice constant views of the clock and it doesn't add up. You'd go up a building which is located in New York, most building with elevators are 5 stories high, Ground floor has at least 4-5 meters height, succeeding floor has 3 meters, and a stair thread of .20 meters average, how fast can an obese cop, with a bad knee, go up a stair so fast? Plus you have dialogues which has at least 10 minutes worth of exchanged words, How can you comply with the 10:00 Am deadline? This was overlooked on the film though. But if you're not that attentive with this kinds of situation, it won't matter. Other than that, the film was really good for action/thriller enthusiasts. It's a nice film, the dialogue just doesn't fit the time frame, that's all. RATING: 8/10 Music and Soundtrack: 4/5
