DVD Movie Review [ 08-31-06 ]

1. Barefoot Gibong | A film with such a heart.  A slightly disfigured / handicapped guy, who loves to run.  Alone, running barefooted on the streets of a small town Korea,  he runs from one end to another to do simple tasks to earn some cash or food for the person he love most of his life, his mother. And with a small opportunity to win some cash, he joins a racing tournament, for him to be able to buy his mother a set of false teeth. Uneducated but never putting a out a face of anger to a slightly harsh world that surrounds him.  This film is not even close to "Rainman" or "I am Sam," but it will surely make you cry.  This is more of a feel-good movie.  You seldom feel good about the fact that it makes you cry, but this film does offer such a heart.  It offers a bit of laugh, alot of happiness, and the fact that it'll make you cry and think of all those people that cared and love for you, and wishing that you'd do the same thing for them, well, i see this as a good film, that appeals to all person.  Even the heartless kind.

Shin Hyeon-joon, portraying gibong, played the part well. But I just have to say, he's a bit clean with his role.  Face it, he lives in a slum, he's work were not a white collar job, he should at least have worned out clothes for this role.  Supporting roles were well-portrayed enough.  A bright cinematography, gives this film a glow that could shine up the scenic places and the protagonist's sense of happiness in living his life.  The soundtrack was cool, but it lacks that certain push on areas where it should accompany the feeling, pushing it forward to pull those tears out of its audience's eyes.  The arrangement and placement were good but I have to say, the mastering lacked this certain quality.  It lacks compressiveness, giving it less grip to render a good scene.  Though some parts were perfectly fitting, I found the soundtrack to be, too predictable.  A crying scene, so we need a sad tune for it.  But nevertheless, it still accompanied the film perfectly.

RATING: 9/10      Music and Soundtrack: 4/5

that's what it usually lack in a scene... specially here in the Phils... even the poor and in a sunny day sowing in the ricefield, you can still see that they wear lipstick... common'... it has to end ' you know'...
and if it's a taong-grasa... still the actress fair skin glows... oh my gosh'... can they just put it like something you won't even recognize them that they are the actor or the actress?..
